Chiefs beat Eagles 27-20 Good and Bad
Robert Lewis Knuckles III
Eagles get their first loss of the season in Arrowhead. Most people had the Chiefs the favorite to win this game but the Eagles played pretty well despite the loss so let’s dive in and talk about the Good and Bad starting with the Bad.
Bad:
- No run game: Once again The Eagles abandoned the run in this game. Eagles signed Legarrette Blount to run the ball and he had zero attempts. For the Eagles to have the best offensive line in football according to Pro Football focus and to barely run the ball is a problem. Carson Wentz had 46 attempts throwing the ball which is ridiculous for a young quarterback. I understand that Legarrette Blount isn’t an every down back but you need to have more attempts to run the ball to get the offense flow going.
- Poor/Missed Tackles: If there's one thing that's extremely to do is tackle and the
Eagles failed to do that. There were plenty of opportunities for Eagles to the turn the Chiefs running game and screen plays for a loss of downs but there were missed and poor tackles that turned the play into positive yards. There was a crucial moment in the game for Eagles to prevent a first down in the 4th quarter on a 3rd and short. Vinny Curry had a key opportunity to sack Alex Smith and make the Chiefs kick a field goal but that turned into a first down and later a touchdown. - Offensive Line: The offensive line just couldn’t seem to block for Wentz. They also couldn’t wide the gap for the running game. Isaac Seumalo didn’t look good making me wonder was getting rid of Allen Barbe a bad idea? Jason Kelce didn’t look good in this game as well. Kelce’s size isn’t holding up against these defensive tackles. This could be his last season playing for the Eagles if he doesn’t get it together.
- Turnovers: Turnovers will always come back to haunt a team and we’ve seen that with this game. One turnover that hurt the Eagles was the Sproles fumble after receiving the punt. The defense managed to prevent a touchdown and made the Chiefs kick a field goal but the biggest turnover that really killed the Eagles was the interception in the 4th quarter when the score was tied. Wentz threw the ball and a defensive lineman tipped the ball and turned into a interception. Now tip balls aren’t a huge issue but when you have a quarterback in Wentz who’s 6’5 and his last game with the Skins and preseason opponent Dolphins Wentz had a couple of tipped passes so this is turning into an issue that Wentz has to fix.
Good:
- Defense hung in there: Coming into this game the Eagles defense faced a tough offense with the speed demon Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce and rookie running back who had a great debut against the Patriots Kareem Hunt. The Eagles defense didn’t allow the Chiefs to score a touchdown in the first half. The defense line put a lot of pressure on Smith and sacked him about four times. But in the second half the Chiefs came alive with Hunt’s 52 yard touchdown run and Travis Kelce showed that he’s one of the best Tight Ends in football leaping over the Eagles.
- Wentz played a decent game: Wentz had a pretty good game. Wentz threw for 333 yards. To do that in Arrowhead is pretty tough to do now granted Wentz did throw the ball a lot which didn’t need to happen. Now he didn’t play the perfect game but it was decent until towards the end. If I had to grade him it would be a B.
- Offense has weapons: We can truly finally say that the Eagles have weapons. We finally saw the connection with Wentz and free agent receiver Alshon Jeffery start to click. Alshon finished the game with 7 receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown, Zach Ertz finished the game with 5 receptions for 97 yards and Torrey Smith had a couple missed opportunities but he finished the game with 4 receptions for 66 yards. Nelson Agholor managed to score during garbage time. One things for sure is that if we had the receivers from last year this game could've been a blowout.
Overall this was a tough loss. There were both goods and bads to take from this game The eagles kept fighting and actually almost won the game but failed to complete the Hail Mary. Wentz needs to work on his mechanics and we really need to get the running game. Now we're still in the beginning of the season so need to freak out just yet. Hopefully the Eagles will fix these mistakes and beat the Giants for their home opener. Let me know what you guys think about this game in the comment section below.
